This outerwear staple might just remind you of fashion’s ulterior motive: to make people happy.

While it’s true that the pandemic has upended the idea of seasonal trends and luxury in fashion, it also reminded us of this: at its core, fashion has the power to uplift, motivate, and inspire.

Never underestimate the power of a good outfit—giving your daily looks some zing can easily bring some cheer, and boy, with everything happening around us lately, we need a reason to smile now more than ever.

As we’ve quickly come to realize over the last few months, comfort is definitely an important factor when it comes to quarantine dressing. Couple that with the sudden bouts of rain we’ve been experiencing and we figured it’s high time we take on a current sartorial favorite—the patterned vest.

Now, because we’re options people, we came up with two iterations: a chic
sweater vest ensemble that’s cozy enough to get you out of your oft-used sweats, and a contemporary utilitarian take that made its rounds in the fall 2020 menswear shows last year.

Take a side or choose ‘em both, just make sure you have fun with it!

The Sweater Vest

Ah, the sleeveless jumper. Once considered granddad territory, the sweater vest has since become a celeb favorite (not going to lie, when Harry Styles wore a quirky sheep-print Loewe vest late last year, that was a moment) and catwalk staple for Fall / Winter 2020 with storied fashion houses like Prada, Christian Dior and Gucci presenting their take on the knitted style.

It’s basically a sweater weather-but-not-quite piece which, all things considered, works just as well for cool, rainy days in the city.

The Utility Vest

Function-focused fashion hit it big in the menswear shows for fall, with luxe utilitarian styles like padded gilets and leather fishing vests. Stussy’s checkered version—waterproof and windproof, by the way—is practical (look at all those pockets!) and lends some serious street cred.

Checks are a fall mainstay and this year is no exception. From clashing plaids to outsized gingham, we saw plenty of them on the runways in the form of tailored blazers, loose suits and statement coats.

Wearing heavy layers in the Philippines is out of the question but you can get in on the trend easy peasy with a crisp, button-down shirt. We love this bold tartan print from Fred Perry.

Don’t let its no-nonsense appearance fool you, these washable AIRism masks are highly breathable, offers UV protection, self-deodorizing, and comes equipped with a layer that filters up to 99% of particles such as pollen and bacteria. Talk about performance.
